GARDA SIOCHANA ACT, 1958.


AN ACT TO PROVIDE FOR THE ADMISSION OF WOMEN TO MEMBERSHIP OF THE GARDA SIOCHANA AND TO PROVIDE FOR OTHER MATTERS CONSEQUENTIAL ON SUCH ADMISSION. [10th June, 1958.]

BE IT ENACTED BY THE OIREACHTAS AS FOLLOWS:—

Admission of women to membership of the Garda Síochána.

1.—(1) Women may be enrolled and appointed by the Commissioner of the Garda Síochána to be members of the Garda Síochána.

(2) Women enrolled and appointed under this section shall, for the purposes of the Police Forces Amalgamation Act, 1925 (No. 7 of 1925), as amended by subsequent enactments, be deemed to be members of the amalgamated force referred to in that Act.

(3) In any orders made under section 12 (which relates to pay and allowances) or section 13 (which relates to pensions, allowances and gratuities) of the said Police Forces Amalgamation Act, 1925 , and in any regulations made under section 14 (which relates to the internal management of the amalgamated force) of that Act, special provision may be made for women enrolled and appointed under this section.

Short title, construction and collective citation.

2.—(1) This Act may be cited as the Garda Síochána Act, 1958.

(2) The Garda Síochána Acts, 1923 to 1945, and this Act shall be construed together as one Act and may be cited together as the Garda Síochána Acts, 1923 to 1958.
