THE ROYAL HIBERNIAN ACADEMY (AMENDMENT OF CHARTER) ACT 2023


An Act to amend the Charter of 1861 under which the Royal Hibernian Academy is incorporated and to alter the provisions relating to membership thereof and to provide for other matters connected therewith.

[20th December, 2023]

WHEREAS by a Royal Charter bearing the date the 5th day of August 1823 and granted by His late Majesty King George the Fourth, the Royal Hibernian Academy in Ireland was incorporated by that name and provisions were made for the conduct thereof;

AND WHEREAS by Charter or Letters Patent bearing date the 27 February 1861 and granted by Her late Majesty Queen Victoria (hereinafter called the Charter of 1861) the said Royal Hibernian Academy in Ireland was again incorporated by that name and provisions were made for the conduct thereof;

AND WHEREAS by virtue of Article 73 of the Constitution of Saorstát Éireann the Charter of 1861, had the force of law in Saorstát Éireann and, by virtue of Article 50 of the Constitution, the said Charter is now in force in Ireland;

AND WHEREAS adaptations of the said Charter of 1861 were made by the Royal Hibernian Academy (Adaption of Charter) Order 1940 in order to enable that Charter to have full force and effect in Ireland;

AND WHEREAS it is desirable that provision be made to increase the membership of the Academy and that certain amendments as hereinafter provided should be made in the Charter of 1861;

AND WHEREAS the said amendments cannot be effected without the authority of the Oireachtas;

Be it therefore enacted by the Oireachtas as follows:
