Garda Síochána (Admissions and Appointments) (Amendment) Regulations 2006

I, MICHAEL MCDOWELL, Tánaiste and Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 128 (2) of the Garda Síochána Act 2005 (No. 20 of 2005), and with the approval of the Government, hereby make the following regulations:

1.         These Regulations may be cited as the Garda Síochána (Admissions and Appointments) (Amendment) Regulations 2006.

2.         These Regulations come into operation on the 9th day of October 2006.

3.         In these Regulations, “Principal Regulations” means the Garda Síochána (Admissions and Appointments) Regulations 1988 ( S.I. No. 164 of 1988 ) as amended by S.I. No. 470 of 1997 , S.I. No. 164 of 2000 , S.I. No. 498 of 2001 , S.I. No. 749 of 2004 and S.I. No. 560 of 2005 .

4.         Regulation 5(1) of the Principal Regulations is amended by substituting the following for subparagraph (e):

“(e) he has been notified by the Public Appointments Service that the person has been successful in a competition which-

(i)         includes a competitive interview, and

(ii)        is of such standard and takes into account such matters, including the giving of due recognition to any satisfactory service by the person as a reserve member of the Garda Síochána, as the Public Appointments Service, after consultation with the Minister, determines; and”.

The Government hereby approve the foregoing Regulations

These Regulations provides for future Garda recruitment boards to take into account satisfactory service by candidates who have served in the Garda Reserve.
