S.I. No. 56/2000 - Importation of Dogs and Cats (Amendment) Order, 2000.


I, Joe Walsh, Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by sections 3 , 10 and 33 of the Diseases of Animals Act, 1966 (No. 6 of 1966) (as adapted by the Agriculture and Food (Alteration of Name of Department and Title of Minister) Order, 1999 ( S.I. No. 307 of 1999 )), hereby order as follows:

1.     This Order may be cited as the Importation of Dogs and Cats (Amendment) Order, 2000.

2.     This Order shall come into operation on 29th February, 2000.

3.     In this Order “Pet Travel Scheme (Pilot Arrangements) (England) Order 1999” means the Order entitled as such and made in the United Kingdom by the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, the Secretary of State for Scotland and the Secretary of State for Wales on 22 December 1999.

4.     Article 1(2) of the Importation of Dogs and Cats Order of 1929 ( S.R. & O., No. 4 of 1929 ) shall not apply to a case of a dog or a cat being brought to the State if each of the following conditions is satisfied in respect of that case:

(a)     the dog or cat had been taken from the State, Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man,

(b)     it had then been brought to England from any territory, except the State or any territory, other than England, or Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man,

(c)     it qualified for an exemption from placement of dogs and cats into quarantine in England by reason of its complying with the provisions of the Pet Travel Scheme (Pilot Arrangements) (England) Order, 1999,

(d)     it had not been outside the territory of Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man between the time it had been brought to England and the time of its arrival in the State.

This Order allows pet dogs and cats entering the UK from countries approved under the terms of their PETS pilot project and which are microchipped, vaccinated, blood tested and certified in accordance with the provisions of that project, to continue their journey to Ireland without the need for quarantine.
