HERRING (RESTRICTION OF FISHING IN THE CELTIC SEA) ORDER, 1983.

I, PADDY O'TOOLE, Minister for Fisheries and Forestry, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 223A (inserted by the Fisheries (Amendment) Act, 1983 (No. 27 of 1983)), of the Fisheries (Consolidation) Act, 1959 (No. 14 of 1959)) and the Fisheries (Transfer of Departmental Administration and Ministerial Functions) Order, 1977 ( S.I. No. 30 of 1977 ) (as adapted by the Fisheries (Alteration of Name of Department and Title of Minister) Order, 1978 ( S.I. No. 195 of 1978 )), hereby order as follows:—

1. This Order may be cited as the Herring (Restriction of Fishing in the Celtic Sea) Order, 1983.

2. This Order shall come into operation on the 1st day of October, 1983.

3. The Herring (Restriction of Fishing in the Celtic Sea) Order, 1982 ( S.I. No. 369 of 1982 ), is hereby amended by the substitution of "31st day of March, 1984," for "31st day of March, 1983," in Article 6 (1).

4. The Sea Fisheries (Conservation and Rational Exploitation) (No. 2) Order, 1978 ( S.I. No. 163 of 1978 ), is hereby revoked.

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

This Order provides for herring fishing to take place in the specified area in the period 1 October, 1983 to 31 March, 1984 by vessels registered in Ireland, France, West Germany, Netherlands and the United Kingdom in accordance with the decision of the EEC Council of Fisheries Ministers on 25 January, 1983. Should the agreed quota limits be reached before the 31 March, 1984, further orders will be made providing for cessation of herring fishing by vessels whose national quotas have been reached. The quotas are as follows:—
