Rules made pursuant to the provisions of section 25 (A) of the Medical Practitioners Act, 1978 , as inserted by the Medical Practitioners (Amendment) Act, 2002 :- Medical Council Rules of General Application prescribing period, courses of training, experience, exemptions and examinations per section 27 (2) (d) of the Act.

Rules of General Application pursuant to the provisions of Section 25 (A) of the Medical Practitioners Act, 1978 , as inserted by the Medical Practitioners (Amendment) Act, 2002 .

1.         These Rules are made pursuant to the provisions of section 25 (A) of the Medical Practitioners Act, 1978 , as inserted by the Medical Practitioners (Amendment) Act, 2002 for the purpose of specifying the prescribed period, the prescribed courses of training, the prescribed experience, the prescribed exemptions and the prescribed examinations referred to in section 27(2)(d) of the Medical Practitioners Act, 1978 .

2.         An applicant wishing to apply for registration under section 27 shall complete and return the application form with the documentation specified by the Medical Council and shall subject to compliance with the requirements of these Rules and the requirements of the Medical Practitioners Act, 1978 , and the Medical Practitioners (Amendment) Act, 2002 be entitled to be registered.

3.         Period during which Temporary Registration is held by an Applicant

An applicant shall satisfy the Medical Council that he/she has been temporarily registered in the General Register of Medical Practitioners for a cumulative total of not less than 24 months during the prescribed period, that is the period since 1st July 1980.

4.         Prescribed Courses of Training and Prescribed Experience

Prescribed Courses of Training

4.1       An applicant shall satisfy the Medical Council that he/she has successfully undergone the full course of training for one of the following:

Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

Faculty of Anaesthetists.

Fellow

College of Anaesthetists, RCSI.

Member

Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.

Faculty of Public Health Medicine.

Member

Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.

Faculty of Occupational Medicine.

Member

Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.

Associate Fellow

Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

Fellow

Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

Member

Irish College of General Practitioners.

Member

Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Member

Royal College of Obstetrics & Gynaecologists.

4.2       The Medical Council may determine whether the course of training upon which an applicant relies, other than those listed in Rule 4.1, is equivalent to any one of the courses of training listed in Rule 4.1.

Prescribed Experience

4.3       An applicant shall satisfy the Medical Council that he/she has obtained a certificate of completion of general professional training awarded by a training body recognised by the Medical Council having been employed in the practice of medicine in one or more of the following specialties recognised by the Medical Council:

5.         Applicants granted initial Temporary Registration Prior to 1st January 1998

An applicant for registration under these rules, whose initial period of temporary registration began before 1st January, 1998, and who satisfies the requirements specified in Rule 4.1 or 4.2 or 4.3, is not required to pass the Temporary Registration Assessment Scheme (otherwise known as TRAS).

6.         Prescribed Exemptions and Prescribed Examinations

Prescribed Exemptions

6.1       An applicant for registration under these Rules who was granted an initial period of temporary registration on or after 1st January 1998 and who satisfies the requirements specified in Rule 3 and who also satisfies the requirements in Rule 4.1 or 4.2 or 4.3 and who has passed a licensing examination accepted by the Medical Council for the purpose of exemption from the TRAS or who possesses a primary qualification in medicine awarded by a university in a Member State of the European Union or one of the postgraduate qualifications listed hereunder shall be exempted from the examination prescribed in Rule 6.4:

6.2       The Medical Council may determine whether the professional qualification upon which an applicant relies, other than those listed in Rule 6.1, is equivalent to any one of the professional qualifications listed in Rule 6.1.

6.3       An applicant for registration under these Rules who was granted an initial period of temporary registration on or after 1st January 1998 and who satisfies the requirements in Rule 3 and who also satisfies the requirements in Rule 4.1 or 4.2 or 4.3 and who has passed the Temporary Registration Assessment Scheme (TRAS), shall be exempted from the examination prescribed in Rule 6.4.

Prescribed Examinations

6.4       The prescribed examination is the Temporary Registration Assessment Scheme (otherwise known as TRAS).
