S.I. No. 166/1999 - European Communities (Amendment) Act, 1998 (Commencement) Order, 1999


I, DAVID ANDREWS, Minister for Foreign Affairs, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 2 (3) of the European Communities (Amendment) Act, 1998 (No. 25 of 1998), hereby order as follows:

1. This Order may be cited as the European Communities (Amendment) Act, 1998 (Commencement) Order, 1999.

2. The 26th day of May, 1999, is hereby appointed as the day on which the European Communities (Amendment) Act, 1998 (No. 25 of 1998), shall come into operation.

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

The Treaty of Amsterdam amending the Treaty on European Union, the Treaties establishing the European Communities and certain related Acts entered into force on 1 May 1999. The purpose of the European Communities (Amendment) Act, 1998 is to make certain amendments to the European Communities Act, 1972 on the entry into force of the Treaty of Amsterdam. The European Communities (Amendment) Act, 1998 (Commencement) Regulations, 1999 deemed the European Communities (Amendment) Act, 1998 to have been in operation between 1 May 1999 and 25 May 1999. The purpose of this Order is to bring the European Communities (Amendment) Act, 1998 into operation with effect from 26 May 1999 in accordance with Section 2(3) of that Act.
