EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES (INDICATION OF PRICES OF FOODSTUFFS AND NON-FOOD PRODUCTS) (AMENDMENT) REGULATIONS, 1993.

I, RUAIRÍ QUINN, Minister for Enterprise and Employment, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 3 of the European Communities Act, 1972 (No. 27 of 1972), and for the purpose of giving further effect to Council Directive No. 79/581/EEC of 19 June, 1979(a), as amended by Council Directive No. 88/315/EEC of 7 June, 1988(b), and to Council Directive No. 88/314/EEC of 7 June, 1988(c), hereby make the following Regulations:

1. (1) These Regulations may be cited as the European Communities (Indication of Prices of Foodstuffs and Non-Food Products) (Amendment) Regulations, 1993.

(2) These Regulations and the European Communities (Indication of Prices of Foodstuffs and Non-Food Products) Regulations, 1991 ( S.I. No. 329 of 1991 ), may be cited together as the European Communities (Indication of Prices of Foodstuffs and Non-Food Products) Regulations, 1991 and 1993.

2. The European Communities (Indication of Prices of Foodstuffs and Non-Food Products) Regulations, 1991, are hereby amended by the insertion of the following Regulation after Regulation 10:

"10A. Any written or printed advertisement or catalogue which mentions the selling price of foodstuffs or non-food products shall indicate the unit price.".

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

These Regulations have been made to give further effect to Council Directive No. 79/581/EEC as amended by Council Directive No. 88/315/EEC on consumer protection in the indication of the prices of foodstuffs, and Council Directive No. 88/314/EEC on consumer protection in the indication of the prices of non-food products.

The Regulations, which come into effect on 22 October, 1993, amend the European Communities (Indication of Prices of Foodstuffs and Non-Food Products) Regulations, 1991, and require the indication of the unit price of foodstuffs and non-food products, as defined by those Regulations, in written or printed advertisements and catalogues.
