ROAD TRAFFIC (SIGNS) (AMENDMENT) REGULATIONS, 1971.

The Minister for Local Government, in exercise of the powers vested in him by section 5 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961 (No. 24 of 1961) and section 95 of the said Act as amended by section 6 of the Road Traffic Act, 1968 (No. 25 of 1968), hereby makes the following Regulations:—

1. (1) These Regulations may be cited as the Road Traffic (Signs) (Amendment) Regulations, 1971.

(2) The Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations, 1962 to 1970, and these Regulations shall be construed together as one and may be cited collectively as the Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations, 1962 to 1971.

2. In these Regulations—

"the Principal Regulations" means the Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations, 1962 ( S.I. No. 171 of 1962 ).

"the 1969 Regulations" means the Road Traffic (Signs) (Amendment) Regulations, 1969 ( S.I. No. 217 of 1969 ).

3. Article 12 of the Principal Regulations is hereby amended by the addition of the following sub-paragraphs—

"(o) continuous yellow lines approximately twelve inches wide enclosing an area of roadway cross-hatched in diagonal yellow lines approximately eight inches wide and approximately four feet six inches apart—to indicate at a junction that, notwithstanding an indication to the contrary given by a light signal, a vehicle, other than a vehicle intending to make a right-hand turn at the junction, shall not enter, either partly or wholly, the cross-hatched area unless the vehicle can clear the area without stopping;

(p) the word "LOADING" written in white, accompanied by two end lines, being continuous white lines at right angles to the edge of the roadway, each such line being approximately four inches wide and extending from the edge of the roadway towards its centre-to indicate a loading bay in a place which is not a meter parking place."

4. Article 2 of the 1969 Regulations is hereby amended by the substitution in the definition of "loading bay" of the word "road" for the words "meter parking place."

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

The Regulations amend the Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations, 1962 to 1970, to provide for the use of "box junction" roadway markings, and to enable loading bays to be provided outside meter parking places.
