S.I. No. 406/2018 - Road Traffic (Courses of Instruction) (Cars) (Amendment) Regulations 2018

I, SHANE ROSS, Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 18 of the Road Traffic Act 1968 (No. 25 of 1968) and the National Roads and Road Traffic (Transfer of Departmental Administration and Ministerial Functions) Order 2002 ( S.I. No. 298 of 2002 ) (as adapted by the Transport (Alteration of Name of Department and Title of Minister) Order 2011 ( S.I. No. 141 of 2011 )), hereby make the following regulations:

1. (1) These Regulations may be cited as the Road Traffic (Courses of Instruction) (Cars) (Amendment) Regulations 2018.

(2) These Regulations come into operation on 5 November 2018.

2. The Road Traffic (Courses of Instruction) (Cars) Regulations 2011 ( S.I. No. 172 of 2011 ) are amended in Regulation 4 by the substitution of the following paragraph for paragraph (4):

“(4) A driving instructor where satisfied that a person who holds a learner permit for category B, other than where code 73 is denoted on it, has satisfactorily completed a lesson of a course of Essential Driver Training for Car Drivers in respect of the category, shall, at the conclusion of the lesson, indicate this in the person’s logbook by completing and stamping the relevant page, and shall immediately furnish the logbook to the person to retain.”.

These Regulations amend the Regulations relating to Essential Driver Training to be taken by learner car drivers, to clarify that a logbook recording lessons should be returned to the pupil by the instructor on completion after each lesson.
