S.I. No. 20/2016 - Electoral Act 1997 (Section 78 (a) and (b)) (Commencement) Order 2016.

I, ALAN KELLY, Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by subsection (6) (c) of section 1 of the Electoral Act 1997 (No. 25 of 1997) (as adapted by the Environment, Heritage and Local Government (Alteration of Name of Department and title of Minister) Order 2011 ( S.I. No. 193 of 2011 )), hereby order as follows:

1. This Order may be cited as the Electoral Act 1997 (Section 78 (a) and (b)) (Commencement) Order 2016.

2. The day on which section 78 (a) and (b) of the Electoral Act 1997 (No. 25 of 1997) comes into operation is 15 January 2016.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Instrument and does not purport to be a legal interpretation).

This Order brings into operation section 78 (a) of the Electoral Act 1997 which amends section 57 (1) of the Electoral Act 1992 and section 78 (b) of the Electoral Act 1997 which amends section 32 (1) of the Presidential Elections Act 1993 , to provide that candidates at Dáil elections and Presidential elections, respectively, may send one piece of election material free of charge for postage to each household rather than each person on the appropriate register of electors for the constituency.
