Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Instrument and does not purport to be a legal interpretation).

These Regulations amend the European Communities (Additives, Colours and Sweeteners in Foodstuffs) Regulations, 2000 ( S.I. No. 437 of 2000 ) and may be cited as the European Communities (Additives, Colours and Sweetners in Foodstuffs) (Amendment) Regulations, 2001.

These Regulations implement Commission Directive 2000/51/EC of 26 July 2000 amending Directive 95/31/EC laying down specific criteria of purity concerning sweeteners for use in foodstuffs.

Purity criteria concern the specifications and analytical techniques for all approved additives. This S.I. replaces the purity criteria specification for the sweeteners Mannitol (E421) and Maltitol Syrup (E965(ii)) which had originally been laid down in Directive 95/31/EC.
