S.I. No. 91 of 1996.

STATISTICS (CENSUS OF POPULATION) ORDER, 1996

I, Jim Higgins, Minister of State at the Department of the Taoiseach, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 25 (1) of the Statistics Act, 1993 (No. 21 of 1993), and the Statistics (Delegation of Ministerial Functions) (No. 2) Order, 1995 ( S.I. No. 220 of 1995 ), hereby order as follows:

1. This Order may be cited as the Statistics (Census of Population) Order, 1996.

2. The general nature of the information required for the purpose of the Census of Population in the year 1996, shall be as follows:

(a) Population;

(b) Name and surname, sex and date of birth;

(c) Condition as to marriage, relationship to head of household;

(d) Place of birth;

(e) Usual residence and usual residence one year prior to the 28th day of April, 1996;

(f) Country of last residence and year of taking up residence in the State;

(g) Usual means of transport to place of work, school or college and distance travelled;

(h) Knowledge of Irish language;

(i) Highest level of education completed and age at which full-time education ceased;

(j) Scientific or technological qualifications held;

(k) Present status, present occupation, present employment status, present employer and such employer's business and the type of work, whether full-time or part-time,

(l) Address of place of work, school or college;

(m) If retired, occupation and employment status prior to retirement;

(n) If unemployed, previous occupation, previous employment status, previous employer and such employer's business and duration of unemployment;

as of the night of Sunday, the 28th day of April, 1996, and the next following morning, which information shall be provided in accordance with forms prepared by the Director General of the Central Statistics Office pursuant to Section 23 of the Statistics Act, 1993 (No. 21 of 1993).

3. The following are the persons, or the classes of persons, by whom the information referred to in Article 2 of this Order is required to be provided, that is to say:

(a) the head, one of the joint heads or any adult member of a private household;

(b) the person in charge of an institution such as a hotel, club, guest house, hostel, boarding house, lodging house, boarding school, college, convent, monastery, barrack, prison, hospital, nursing home or other establishment of any kind;

(c) the master in charge or other person in charge of a vessel in any harbour, port, bay, creek, lake, river, canal or elsewhere in waters within the jurisdiction of the State;

(d) individuals.

4. The persons or classes of persons specified in Article 3 of this Order are hereby required to provide the Central Statistics Office with the information referred to in Article 2 of this Order in respect of every person who—

(a) passes the night of Sunday, the 28th day of April, 1996, in the household, institution or vessel or who arrives on the morning of Monday, the 29th day of April, 1996, not having been enumerated elsewhere, or

(b) not being otherwise enumerated, is required to provide that information by virtue of Article 3(d) of this Order,
