EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES (MEASURING INSTRUMENTS) REGULATIONS, 1988.

I, ALBERT REYNOLDS, Minister for Industry and Commerce, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 3 of the European Communities Act, 1972 (No. 27 of 1972), and for the purpose of giving effect to Council Directive No. 87/354/EEC of 25 June, 19871 and Council Directive 87/355/EEC of 25 June, 19872, hereby make the following Regulations.

1. These Regulations may be cited as the European Communities (Measuring Instruments) Regulations, 1988.

2. References in the Regulations specified in the Table to this Regulation to Council Directive No. 71/316/EEC of 26 July, 19713 shall be construed as references to that Directive as amended by Council Directive No. 83/575/EEC of 26 October, 19834, Council Directive No. 87/354/EEC of 25 June, 1987 and Council Directive No. 87/355/EEC of 25 June, 1987.

3. The European Communities (Measuring Instruments) Regulations, 1973 ( S.I. No. 67 of 1973 ), are hereby amended—

(a) in Schedule 1, by the substitution, in paragraph 1. 1.1. 1.1.1.(a), of "IRL for Ireland" for "IR for Ireland" and the insertion after "Netherlands" of, "E for Spain, El for Greece and P for Portugal," and

(b) in Schedule 2, by the substitution in paragraph 1 (i) of "IRL for Ireland" for "IR for Ireland" and the insertion after "Netherlands" of, "E for Spain, El for Greece and P for Portugal".

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

These Regulation are made to give effect to Council Directive No. 87/354/EEC and Council Directive No. 87/355/EEC. Directive No. 87/354/EEC amends in respect of Greece the letters used on measuring instruments to distinguish Member States.

Directive No. 87/355/EEC sets out the drawings to be used for the distinguishing letters for Spain, Greece, Portugal and Ireland and replaces the distinguishing letters IR for Ireland by IRL.
