S.I. No. 273 of 1986.

EXPLOSIVES (POTASSIUM NITRATE AND SODIUM NITRATE) ORDER, 1986

WHEREAS the substances specified in Article 5 of this Order appear to the Government to be specially dangerous to life or property by reason of their explosive properties:

NOW, the Government, in exercise of the powers conferred on them by section 104 of the Explosives Act, 1875, hereby order as follows:

1. This Order may be cited as the Explosives (Potassium Nitrate and Sodium Nitrate) Order, 1986.

2. This Order shall come into operation on the 1st day of August, 1986.

3. The Interpretation Act, 1937 (No. 38 of 1937), applies to this Order.

4. It is hereby declared that the substances to which this Order applies shall be deemed to be explosives within the meaning of the Explosives Act, 1875.

5. This Order applies to the following substances:—

( a ) potassium nitrate or any mixture or solution which contains potassium nitrate in combination with any other substance or substances, and

( b ) sodium nitrate or any mixture or solution which contains sodium nitrate in combination with any other substance or substances,

but excluding any substance mentioned in paragraph (a) or (b) of this Article which is a pest fumigant or comprises any other manufactured goods containing not more than 5 per cent. by weight of potassium nitrate or sodium nitrate or either of those substances in combination.

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

This Order declares potassium nitrate and sodium nitrate to be explosives within the meaning of the Explosives Act, 1875, thus rendering these substances subject to the controls operated under that Act.
