INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH AND STANDARDS (SECTION 44) (RESEMBLANCE TO FOOD OF NON-FOOD PRODUCTS USED BY CHILDREN) ORDER, 1983.

I, JOHN BRUTON, Minister for Industry and Energy, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by Section 44 of the Industrial Research and Standards Act, 1961 (No. 20 of 1961), and the Industry and Energy (Transfer of Departmental Administration of Ministerial Functions) Order, 1983 ( S.I. No. 21 of 1983 ), hereby make the following Order:

1. This Order may be cited as the Industrial Research and Standards (Section 44) (Resemblance to Food of Non-food Products Used by Children) Order, 1983.

2. This Order shall come into operation on the 1st day of February, 1984.

3. It shall be unlawful to manufacture, assemble or sell any non-food product intended for use by children unless it does not look, taste or smell like a sweet, sweetmeat or other confectionery or fruit or other food product.

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

The purpose of this Order is to ensure that non-food products intended for use by children shall not be marketed in a design that would make them attractive to small children to eat.

The objective of the Order is to provide for the greater safety of children by minimising the risk of their eating non-food products.
