ROAD TRAFFIC (SIGNS) (AMENDMENT) REGULATIONS, 1983.

The Minister for the Environment in exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 5 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961 (No. 24 of 1961) and section 95 of the said Act as amended by section 6 of the Road Traffic Act, 1968 (No. 25 of 1968) hereby makes the following Regulations:—

1. (1) These Regulations may be cited as the Road Traffic (Signs) (Amendment) Regulations, 1983.

(2) These Regulations and the Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations 1962 to 1981 shall be construed together as one and may be collectively cited as the Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations, 1962 to 1983.

2. In these Regulations "motorway" has the meaning assigned to it in section 1 of the Local Government (Roads and Motorways) Act, 1974 (No. 6 of 1974).

3. Article 12 of the Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations, 1962 ( S.I. No. 171 of 1962 ) is hereby amended by the insertion after sub-paragraph (p) of the following sub-paragraphs:—

"(q) a continuous white line approximately 150 millimetres wide — to indicate the right-hand edge of the carriageway of a motorway;

(r) a continuous yellow line approximately 150 millimetres wide — to indicate the left-hand edge of the carriageway of a motorway;

(s) a broken white line consisting of segments having the following dimensions and spacings:—

(i) segments approximately 100 millimetres wide, 4,000 millimetres long and spaced 8,000 millimetres apart — to indicate the boundary of a traffic lane on a motorway,

(ii) segments approximately 150 millimetres wide, 2,000 millimetres long and spaced 2,000 millimetres apart — to indicate the boundary of an access lane or an exit lane on a motorway.".

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

These Regulations amend article 12 of the Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations, 1962 ( S.I. No. 171 of 1962 ) and prescribe a series of roadway markings to be used on a motorway i.e. markings to indicate the left and right hand edges of the carriageway of a motorway and the boundaries of traffic lanes, access lanes and exit lanes on a motorway.
