INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH AND STANDARDS (SECTION 44) (GAS-OPERATED OVENS) ORDER, 1983.

I, JOHN BRUTON, Minister for Industry and Energy, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by Section 44 of the Industrial Research and Standards Act, 1961 , (No. 20 of 1961), and the Industry and Energy (Transfer of Departmental Administration and Ministerial Functions) Order 1983 ( S.I. 2. In this Order "a gas-operated oven" means an enclosable compartment used for cooking or similar purposes in which heat is produced by the combustion of natural gas, manufactured gas or liquefied petroleum gas in gaseous form.

3. It shall be unlawful to manufacture, assemble or sell a gas-operated oven or an appliance containing such an oven unless it complies with the following condition, namely, that the gas burner in the oven is fitted with an effective flame failure device.

GIVEN under my Official Seal, this 29th day of July, 1983.

JOHN BRUTON,

Minister for Industry and

Energy.

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

The purpose of this Order is to prohibit the manufacture, assembly or sale of a gas-operated oven or an appliance containing such an oven, which is not fitted with a device to prevent the issue of unignited gas, which could cause an explosion or fire on subsequent ignition.

The objective of the Order is, in the interests of greater safety, to ensure that all gas-operated ovens are fitted with an effective flame failure device which automatically shuts off the supply of gas to the oven burner if the flame becomes extinguished.
