EXPLANATORY NOTE.

These Regulations replace the Road Traffic (Speed Limits) (County Borough of Dublin and County of Dublin) Regulations, 1967 ( S.I. No. 93 of 1967 ) and the Road Traffic (Speed Limits) (County Borough of Dublin and County of Dublin) (Amendment) Regulations, 1967 ( S.I. No. 225 of 1967 ) and alter the speed limits applicable to certain roads in these areas (including the Borough of Dún Laoghaire).

The Regulations exclude the public roads mentioned in the First Schedule from the scope of the built-up area speed limit of 30 m.p.h. prescribed by section 45 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961 thus enabling special speed limits, e.g., 40 m.p.h. or 50 m.p.h., to be applied to these roads. Public roads to which special speed limits apply are specified in the Third, Fourth and Fifth Schedules.

The Regulations declare that the roads mentioned in the Second Schedule, which would otherwise be outside the scope of the built-up area speed limit of 30 m.p.h., shall be subject to that limit.

The Regulations prescribe a speed limit of 40 m.p.h. in respect of the public roads mentioned in the Third Schedule, a speed limit of 50 m.p.h. in respect of the public roads mentioned in the Fourth Schedule and a speed limit of 60 m.p.h. in respect of the public road mentioned in the Fifth Schedule for all mechanically propelled vehicles.

Ambulances, fire brigade vehicles and Garda Síochána vehicles while being used in the course of duty are excepted from all speed limits by the Regulations.
