IMPOSITION OF DUTIES (No. 51) (GLOVES) ORDER, 1958.

The Government, in exercise of the powers conferred on them by section 1 of the Imposition of Duties Act, 1957 (No. 7 of 1957), hereby order as follows :

1. This Order may be cited as the Imposition of Duties (No. 51) (Gloves) Order, 1958.

2. The Emergency Imposition of Duties (No. 345) (Gloves) Order, 1955 ( S.I. No. 46 of 1955 ), shall, as respects articles imported on or after the 12th day of December, 1958, have effect as if the following description were substituted for the description in the second column of the Schedule thereto at reference number 2, namely :

" Gloves which are made wholly or partly of synthetic or artificial textile and which do not exceed 40s. 0d. per dozen pairs in value, excluding—

(a) gloves which are made mainly of wool and either are wholly or mainly knitted or are made of knitted fabric,

(b) gloves which contain not less than 50% by weight of cotton, and

(c) gloves which are wholly or mainly netted or crocheted or are made wholly or mainly of netted or crocheted fabric."

3. Whenever the Minister for Finance, after consultation with the Minister for Industry and Commerce, so thinks proper, the Revenue Commissioners may by licence authorise any particular person, subject to compliance with such conditions as they may think fit to impose, to import any articles which are chargeable, by virtue of the operation of paragraph 2 of this Order, with the duty imposed by the Emergency Imposition of Duties (No. 345) (Gloves) Order, 1955 ( S.I. No. 46 of 1955 ), and which were not chargeable with that duty immediately before the 12th day of December, 1958, on payment of that duty at a rate equivalent to the rate which obtained immediately before the 12th day of December, 1958, in respect of the duty imposed thereon by the Emergency Imposition of Duties (No. 267) (Personal Clothing and Wearing Apparel) Order, 1951 ( S.I. No. 357 of 1951 ), provided that—

(a) application for such licence is made to the Minister for Industry and Commerce on or before the 11th day of January, 1959.

(b) it is shown to the satisfaction of the Minister for Industry and Commerce that the articles which are the subject of such application were in transit or on order immediately before the 12th day of December, 1958, and

(c) the period of validity of any such licence does not exceed three months.

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

This Order extends the scope of the specific duty of 30/- (full) 20/- (pref.), per doz. pairs on synthetic or artificial textile gloves, which do not exceed 40/- per doz. pairs in value, to include such gloves which are less than 7½" in length.
