STANDARD SPECIFICATION (CAST IRON RAINWATER GOODS) ORDER, 1953

I, SEAN F. LEMASS, Minister for Industry and Commerce, in exercise of the power conferred on me by subsection (3) of section 20 of the Industrial Research and Standards Act, 1946 (No. 52 of 1946), hereby order as follows :—

1. This Order may be cited as the Standard Specification (Cast Iron Rainwater Goods) Order, 1953.

2.—(1) The specification set forth in Part II of the Schedule to this Order is hereby declared to be the standard specification for the commodity described in Part I of the said Schedule.

(2) The said standard specification may be cited as Irish Standard 42: 1953.

SCHEDULE.

PART I.

CAST IRON RAINWATER GOODS

PART II.

SPECIFICATION

In this specification, the letters I.S., when followed by two sets of numbers, refer to the Irish Standard of which the first is the serial number and the second the year of its promulgation by the Minister for Industry and Commerce.

In this specification, the letters B.S., when followed by two sets of numbers, refer to the British Standard of which the first is the serial number and the second is the year of its publication by the British Standards Institution.

SCOPE

1. This specification deals with rainwater pipes, half-round gutters, fittings and accessories manufactured from cast iron.

MATERIAL

2. Cast-iron rainwater pipes, gutters, fittings and accessories shall be manufactured from a suitable grade of cast iron of a quality not inferior to that specified as grade 10 in B.S. 1452: 1948.

WORKMANSHIP

3. Castings shall be in all respects sound, good and free from pinholes, laps or other imperfections. They shall be neatly dressed and carefully fettled and all surfaces shall be smooth. The ends shall be finished reasonably square to the axis.

DIMENSIONS

4. The lengths of straight pipes and gutters shall be as specified in Clause 5 and the thicknesses of the barrels of straight pipes and of gutters shall be as specified in Clause 7. The external shape and dimensions of sockets for pipes and fittings shall be as shown in Fig. 1 and Table 1. All other dimensions of pipes, gutters and fittings shall be as nearly as practicable as shown in Tables 1 to 13 and Figs. 1 to 23 and as specified in Clause 9.

Pipes and fittings shall be cylindrical, their inner and outer surfaces being as nearly as practicable concentric. The spigots shall in all cases enter to the bottom of the sockets.

LENGTH OF STRAIGHT PIPES AND GUTTERS

5. Unless otherwise specified straight pipes shall be made in lengths of 5 feet effective length, and gutters shall be made in lengths of 6 feet effective length, in each case exclusive of the internal depth of the socket. Straight pipes may also be made in lengths of 6 feet overall inclusive of the internal depth of the socket (approximately 5 feet 9 inches effective length). The actual length of any pipe or gutter shall be not more than ¼ inch under or over the specified length.

STRAIGHTNESS

6. Deviation from straightness of any pipe or gutter shall not exceed 3/8 inch in any 5 feet of length.

THICKNESS OF PIPES AND GUTTERS

7. The thickness of the barrels of straight pipes of 2 ½ inches, 3 inches, 4 inches and 5 inches nominal size and the thickness of gutters shall be not less than 1/8 inch.

The thickness of the barrels of pipes of 6 inches nominal size shall be not less than 9/64 inch.

WEIGHT OF PIPES AND GUTTERS

8. The weights of straight pipes and gutters shall be not less than the values set out in Tables 1 and 11 respectively.

THICKNESS OF FITTINGS

9. The thickness of fittings shall be not less than the corresponding darts of straight pipe: and gutters.

HOLDERBATS

10. Cast iron holderbats shall be of the dimensions shown in Fig. 9 and Table 9. They shall be provided with brass bolts and nuts as shown.

BRACKETS

11. Cast iron fascia brackets shall be of the shape and dimensions shown in Fig. 12 and shall weigh not less than the values given in Table 12.

HAMMER TEST

12. Every pipe shall ring clearly when struck at any point with a light hammer.

FINISH

13. As required by the purchaser pipes and fittings shall be supplied unpainted, painted or galvanised and gutters shall be supplied unpainted or painted. Painting and galvanising where required shall be carried out in accordance with Clauses 14 and 15.

PAINTING

14. Pipes, gutters and fittings to be painted shall be cleaned of all scale, rust and dirt and the external surfaces painted with one coat of paint conforming to the requirements of I.S. 18: 1949 for paint No. P. 4.

GALVANISING

15. Pipes and fittings to be galvanised shall be thoroughly cleaned of all scale, rust and dirt by pickling in a bath of dilute acid and, after washing, shall be dipped in a bath of molten virgin spelter containing not more than 2½ per cent of impurities. They shall remain in the bath until the surfaces are completely and evenly coated with firmly adherent spelter free from acid spots and unsightly blemishes or other defects.

MARKING

16. Every pipe and fitting shall have cast on it in a legible manner a number indicating the nominal size, together with the manufacturer's name or mark.

FACILITIES FOR INSPECTION

17. The purchaser or his representative shall, if he so requires, be given access to the works of the manufacturer at all reasonable times for the purpose of carrying out inspection during manufacture. The manufacturer shall, at his own cost, supply labour and appliances for such inspection.
