MILK AND DAIRIES REGULATIONS, 1949.

1. (1) These Regulations may be cited as the Milk and Dairies Regulations, 1949.

(2) These Regulations shall come into operation on the 13th day of October, 1949.

2. In these Regulations—

" the Minister " means the Minister for Agriculture ;

" the Regulations of 1936 " means the and Dairies Regulations, 1936 ( S. R. & O. No. 310 of 1936 ).

3. (1) Where the Minister is satisfied that premises comply with conditions mentioned in paragraph (2) of this Article, he may certify the premises to be a covered court cowshed.

(2) The following are the conditions referred to in paragraph (1) of this Article—

(a) the premises shall be made of suitable material and be so constructed as to provide adequate light, ventilation and general sanitation ;

(b) the floors and walls of the premises shall be made of suitable impervious material and the floor shall be so laid that the slope thereof shall be from the sides to the centre ; and

(c) the premises shall be in all other respects suitable for housing cows on the covered court system.

4. The following provisions shall apply to each covered court cowshed—

(a) it shall be used solely for housing cows of a herd in respect of which a producer's licence relating to the special designation " Highest Grade " milk is in force ;

(b) the number of cows housed therein shall not exceed twenty and the floor area shall be such as to provide not less than one hundred square feet per cow ;

(c) it shall be cleaned or disinfected or cleaned and disinfected at least once during the period in which it is in use each year or more frequently if the Minister considers it necessary ;

(d) it shall be freshly bedded each day with at least one and one half stone of clean straw for each cow housed therein.

(e) cows shall not be milked therein and separate and suitable accommodation shall be provided for the milking of cows housed therein.

5. If, at any time, it appears to the Minister that a covered court cowshed no longer fulfils the conditions mentioned in paragraph (2) of Article 3 of these Regulations or that the provisions (or any of them) set out in Article 4 of these Regulations are not or is not being complied with, he may revoke the certificate granted by him in respect of the cowshed and it shall accordingly cease to be a covered court cowshed.

6. A person who operates a covered court cowshed for the purpose of his business shall, as respects such operation, be deemed to be exempted from the requirements of paragraph (a) of Article 10 and Article 18 of the Regulations of 1936.

7. Articles 11, 12, 13, 14 and 32 of the Regulations of 1936 shall not apply to a covered court cowshed.
