S.I. No. 208/1948 - Seanad (Panel Members) General Election Order, 1948.


WHEREAS on the 12th day of January, 1948, the President, on the advice of the Taoiseach, dissolved Dáil Éireann :

AND WHEREAS a general election for Seanad Éireann is required by section 8 of Article 18 of the Constitution to take place not later than ninety days after the said dissolution :

NOW, THEREFORE, the Minister for Local Government in exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 24 of the Seanad Electoral (Panel Members) Act, 1947 , by this his Order appoints for the purposes of the said election as follows :—

1. The period during which the Seanad Returning Officer may receive proposals for nominations to the panels by nominating bodies shall expire at noon on the 19th day of February, 1948.

2. The period during which the Seanad Returning Officer may receive nominations to the panels by members of the Oireachtas shall expire at noon on the 6th day of March, 1948.

3. The nominating committee (general election) meetings shall be held at the National College of Art, Kildare Street, Dublin, at the following times :—

(a) for the Cultural and Educational Panel, 11 o'clock in the forenoon on the 3rd day of March, 1948;

(b) for the Agricultural Panel, 4 o'clock in the afternoon on the 3rd day of March, 1948 ;

(c) for the Industrial and Commercial Panel, 11 o'clock in the forenoon on the 4th day of March, 1948;

(d) for the Administrative Panel, 4 o'clock in the afternoon on the 4th day of March, 1948.

4. The 9th day of March, 1948, shall be the day on which the Seanad Returning Officer will sit for the completion of the panels and the place at which he will sit for the said purpose shall be Leinster House, Dublin.

5. The day on which the ballot papers shall be issued shall be the 13th day of March, 1948.

6. The poll shall be closed at 11 o'clock in the forenoon on the 7th day of April, 1948.

7. The address of the Seanad Returning Officer to which nomination papers and other communications may be sent shall be Leinster House, Dublin.

8. This Order may be cited as the Seanad (Panel Members) General Election Order, 1948.
