STATUTORY RULES AND ORDERS. 1929. No. 7.

LOCAL ELECTIONS (AMENDMENT) ORDER, 1929.

WHEREAS by the Local Elections Order, 1928 (hereinafter referred to as " The Principal Order ") the Minister for Local Government and Public Health, in-exercise of the powers vested in him under the Local Government (Application of Enactments) Order, 1898, and under the Local Government (Ireland) Act, 1919, did frame and prescribe the rules therein set forth for the conduct of elections of county councillors and urban and rural district councillors, and of Aldermen in boroughs and of guardians in boroughs and urban county districts, and of commissioners of a Town not being an urban district, and as to the method of voting and transferring and counting votes at such elections, and the duties of returning officers thereat, and did also make in the statutes specified in the tenth schedule to The Principal Order, the adaptations, alterations and exceptions appearing in the said rules, and did apply the said statutes in the manner set out in The Principal Order :

AND WHEREAS it is expedient that the Principal Order be now amended in the manner provided by this Order :

NOW THEREFORE, I, the Minister for Local Government and Public Health, in exercise of the powers vested in such Minister as aforesaid, and of all other powers enabling me in that behalf do hereby order as follows :—

1. This Order may be referred to as " The Local Elections (Amendment) Order, 1929.

2. Article 32 of the Principal Order shall be amended by the addition thereto of the following words, that is to say :—

" Such list of candidates may be arranged either in one continuous column or in two or more columns in such manner (without departing from the said alphabetical order) as in the opinion of the returning officer is best calculated to facilitate marking and counting."

3. Where the list of candidates contained in the ballot paper is arranged in more than one column under the provisions of Article 32 of The Principal Order, as amended by this Order, the form of the front of the ballot paper prescribed in the fifth schedule to The Principal Order shall be modified accordingly.
