THE GARDA SIOCHANA PAY ORDER, 1924.

By virtue and in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 8 of the Garda Siochana (Temporary Provisions) Act, 1923, and of all other powers enabling me in that behalf, I, CAOIMHGHIN O h-UIGIN, Minister for Home Affairs, with the sanction of the Minister for Finance, do hereby order as follows:—

1. From and after the date upon which this Order shall come into operation the pay of the members of the Garda Siochana of the several ranks and grades herein below specified shall be in accordance with the following rates, scales and conditions:—

2. The Scale for Guards as prescribed in the foregoing Article shall be subject to the following special conditions:

(a) The pay of any Guard who joins the force after the date of this Order shall during the period of his training at the Depot be at the rate of 50/- weekly and any such Guard shall on first appointment be regarded as on probation. The nominal period of probation shall be one year, but this period may be extended by the Commissioner to eighteen months if at the end of the first year the Guard has not made sufficient progress for his appointment to be confirmed, but it is desired to give him a further opportunity of showing that he is likely to become an efficient policeman.

(b) A Guard who joins the Force after the date of this Order shall not receive any advance in the scale of pay during the period of probation. He shall receive his first increment at the end of one year or at such later date as his appointment may be confirmed and all subsequent increments up to the tenth, bringing his pay to 78/- weekly shall be automatic on his completing 2 years, 3 years and so on reckoning from the date of his first appointment.

(c) The grant of the additional long service increments, viz., the last two increments in the scale, shall be at the discretion of the Commissioner.

Subject to his conduct being good and his service efficient, a Guard shall be eligible to receive the first of such increments after 7 years at the ordinary maximum (78/- weekly) and the second such increment after a further 5 years service, subject to the same conditions as to conduct and efficiency.

3. A Third Grade Superintendent shall be given credit for his period of service, if any, in the rank of Inspector by reckoning it for the purpose of increments.

4. The pay prescribed in this Order shall be subject in every case to a deduction at the rate of two and one-half per cent as a contribution towards the general pension charge of the Garda Siochana.

5. In this Order the word "Force" means the Garda Siochana.

6. This Order shall come into operation on the first day of March, 1924.

7. This Order may be cited as the Garda Siochana Pay Order, 1924.
