I, LEO VARADKAR, Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 4 of the Merchant Shipping (Safety Convention) Act 1952 (No. 29 of 1952) (as adapted by section 2 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1981 (No. 33 of 1981)) and the Maritime Transport, Safety and Security (Transfer of Departmental Administration and Ministerial Functions) Order 2005 ( S.I. No. 842 of 2005 ) (as adapted by the Transport (Alteration of Name of Department and Title of Minister) Order 2011 ( S.I. No. 141 of 2011 )), hereby order as follows:

1. This Order may be cited as the Merchant Shipping (Safety Convention) (Countries of Acceptance) Order 2013.

2. It is declared that—

(a) the government of each of the countries specified in Schedule 1 has accepted the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea signed in London on behalf of the Government on 1 November 1974, and

(b) that convention extends to each of the territories specified in Schedule 2.

3. The Merchant Shipping (Safety Convention) (Countries of Acceptance) Order 2008 ( S.I. No. 553 of 2008 ) is revoked.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Instrument and does not purport to be a legal interpretation.)

This Order declares that the Government of the countries specified in the Order have accepted the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea 1974 (SOLAS) of the International Maritime Organisation and that the Convention extends to particular territories. The effect of the Order is to bring the list of countries and territories up to date. It also revokes the previous Statutory Instrument, the Merchant Shipping (Safety Convention) (Countries of Acceptance) Order 2008 ( S.I. No. 553 of 2008 ).
