S.I. No. 592/2009 - Medical Council Rules Specifying Particulars to be Contained in the Register of Medical Practitioners, 2009.


Notice of the making of this Statutory Instrument was published in

“Iris Oifigiúil” of 15th October, 2010.

These rules are made pursuant to the provisions of section 11 and sections 43-44, 46-51 and 56 of the Medical Practitioners Act 2007 (“the Act”) for the purpose of specifying the particulars of each registered medical practitioner to be contained in the Register of Medical Practitioners (“the Register”). These rules should be read in conjunction with the Registration Rules 2009. The rules of interpretation shall be as stated in section 2 of the Act unless otherwise stated.

1. For the purpose of section 11(2)(b) of the Act, the Register and its divisions will be maintained in accordance with Part 6 of the Act and the Registration Rules made under section 11 of the Act.

2. For the purpose of section 11(2)(c) of the Act, the Register will contain in respect of each registered medical practitioner the names of the medical practitioner and the qualifications they are entitled to have registered under the Act and the following identifying particulars of the medical practitioner:

2.1 the date the registered qualification(s) was/were awarded;

2.2 the registration number specific to the medical practitioner;

2.3 the registered address of the medical practitioner;

2.4 the gender of the medical practitioner;

2.5 the division of the Register in which the medical practitioner is registered and/or the registration status and registration date;

2.6 where the medical practitioner is registered in the Trainee Specialist Division and holds trainee specialist registration for the purposes of medical specialist training, the details of the individually numbered, identifiable post in which they are currently practising;

2.7 where the medical practitioner is registered in the Specialist Division, the specialty/ies and/or subspecialty/ies in which the medical practitioner is registered in that division;

2.8 where the medical practitioner is registered in the Visiting EEA Practitioners Division, the particulars of the temporary and occasional medical services being rendered and the period(s) in which the medical practitioner expects to render them;

2.9 where the medical practitioner’s registration is subject to conditions, the words “CONDITIONS ATTACHED” will be entered in the Register against the medical practitioner’s name and, on written application to the Medical Council, the particulars of the conditions will be made available to the public and/or any other interested party, unless the Medical Council deems it inappropriate to do so.

3. The Register will be established, maintained and published in electronic form.

THESE RULES WILL COMMENCE ON THE 28TH DAY OF APRIL 2009

Any reference to the Medical Practitioners Act 2007 includes the amendment of that Act by the Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2007 and any subsequent amendments.
