SOCIAL WELFARE (CONSOLIDATED SUPPLEMENTARY WELFARE ALLOWANCE) (AMENDMENT) (NO. 2) REGULATIONS, 1998.

The Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by sections 4, 179, 188 and Rule 1(1)(m) of Part III of the Third Schedule (as amended by section 26 of the Social Welfare Act, 1997 (No. 10 of 1997)) of the Social Welfare (Consolidation) Act, 1993 (No. 27 of 1993), hereby makes the following Regulations:

1 Citation and construction

1. (1) These Regulations may be cited as the Social Welfare (Consolidated Supplementary Welfare Allowance) (Amendment) (No. 2) Regulations, 1998.

(2) These Regulations and the Social Welfare (Consolidated Supplementary Welfare Allowance) Regulations, 1995 to 1998 shall be construed together as one and may be cited as the Social Welfare (Consolidated Supplementary Welfare Allowance) Regulations, 1995 to 1998.

2 Commencement

2. These Regulations shall come into operation on the 1st day of June, 1998.

3 Interpretation.

3. In these Regulations "the Principal Regulations" means the Social Welfare (Consolidated Supplementary Welfare Allowance) Regulations, 1995 ( S.I. No. 382 of 1995 ).

4 Amendment to Regulations

4. The Principal Regulations are hereby amended by—

(a) the substitution in article 3 for the definition of "credit union" of the following definition—

" 'credit union' means a society which is—

(i) registered as a credit union under the Industrial and Provident Societies Acts, 1893 to 1978, by virtue of the Credit Union Act, 1996 or

(ii) registered under the Industrial and Provident Societies Acts (Northern Ireland) 1969 and 1976 of the British Parliament;", and

(b) the substitution in article 33 (inserted by article 7 of Social Welfare (Consolidated Supplementary Welfare Allowance) (Amendment) Regulations, 1996 ( S.I. No. 190 of 1996 )) for "£34.10" of "£50.00".

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

These Regulations provide for an increase to£50 in the amount of weekly earnings disregarded from employment of a rehabilitative nature in the assessment of means for Supplementary Welfare Allowance.

The Regulations also provide for the extension of the definition of "credit union" to include credit unions registered in Northern Ireland.
