BOROUGH OF SLIGO LOCAL ELECTORAL AREAS ORDER, 1994.

The Minister for the Environment, in exercise of the powers vested in him by section 35 of the Local Government Act, 1941 (No. 23 of 1941), as amended by sections 3 and 87 of, and the First Schedule to the Electoral Act, 1963 (No. 19 of 1963), hereby orders as follows:

1. This Order may be cited as the Borough of Sligo Local Electoral Areas Order, 1994.

2. The Borough of Sligo Local Electoral Areas Order, 1979 ( S.I. No. 46 of 1979 ) is hereby revoked.

3. In this Order "the Borough" means the Borough of Sligo as altered for the purposes of local elections by the Local Government (Boundaries) (Town Elections) Regulations, 1994 and references to the borough boundary shall be construed accordingly.

4. The Borough shall be divided into the local electoral areas set out in the first column of the Schedule to this Order.

5. (1) Each such local electoral area shall consist of the area described in the second column of the Schedule to this Order opposite the name of such local electoral area.

(2) In the Schedule to this Order—

( a ) a reference to a line drawn along any bridge, river, road or street shall be construed as a reference to a line drawn along the centre of the bridge, river, road or street;

( b ) a reference to the point at which any bridge, river, road or street joins any bridge, river, road or street shall be construed as a reference to the point at which a line drawn along the centre of the one would be joined by a line drawn along the centre of the other;

( c ) a reference to the point at which a bridge, river, road or street joins or is intersected by a boundary shall be construed as a reference to the point at which a line drawn along the centre of such river, road or street joins or is intersected by such boundary.

6. The number of members of the Council of the Borough to be elected for each such local electoral area shall be the number set out in the third column of the Schedule to this Order opposite the name of such local electoral area.

7. The number of the said members to be elected for each such local electoral area who are to be aldermen shall be the number set out in the fourth column of the Schedule to this Order opposite the name of such local electoral area.

Number One

That part of the Borough situated within a line drawn as follows:

Commencing at the junction of Strandhill Road with the borough boundary; thence commencing in a northerly direction and proceeding along the borough boundary to its junction with the Garvoge River nearest the townland of Hazelwood Demesne; thence commencing in a north-westerly direction and proceeding along the Garvogue river to its intersection by Hyde Bridge; thence in a westerly direction along Hyde Bridge, Wine Street, Lord Edward Street and Strandhill Road to the starting point.

Number Two

That part of the Borough situated within a line drawn as follows:

Commencing at the junction of O'Connell Street and Wine Street; thence in an easterly direction along Wine Street and Hyde Bridge to its intersection by the Garvoge River; thence commencing in a southerly direction and proceeding along the Garvoge River to its junction with the borough boundary; thence commencing in a southerly direction and proceeding along the borough boundary to its junction with Ballysadare Road; thence commencing in a northerly direction and proceeding along Ballysadare Road and Pearse Road to the junction of the last-mentioned road with Mail Coach Road; thence in a north-westerly direction along Mail Coach Road to its junction with Connolly Street; thence commencing in a north-easterly direction and proceeding along Connolly Street, High Street and Market Street to the junction of the last-mentioned street with Grattan Street; thence in a westerly direction along Grattan Street to its junction with O'Connell Street; thence in a north-westerly direction along O'Connell Street to the starting point.

That part of the Borough situated within a line drawn as follows:

Commencing at the junction of the borough boundary with Strandhill Road; thence commencing in a south-easterly direction and proceeding along Strandhill Road, Lord Edward Street and Wine Street to the junction of the last-mentioned street with O'Connell Street; thence in a south-easterly direction along O'Connell Street to its junction with Grattan Street; thence in an easterly direction along Grattan Street to its junction with Market Street; thence commencing in a southerly direction and proceeding along Market Street, High Street and Connolly Street to the junction of the last-mentioned street with Mail Coach Road; thence in a south-easterly direction along Mail Coach Road to its junction with Pearse Road: thence commencing in a southerly direction and proceeding along Pearse Road and Ballsadare Road to the junction of the last-mentioned road with the borough boundary; thence commencing in a westerly direction and proceeding along the borough boundary to the starting point.

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

This Order divides the Borough of Sligo into three electoral areas for the purposes of local elections and fixes the number of members of the Council of the Borough to be elected for each area and the number of those members who are to be aldermen.
