DENTISTS (TERMINATION OF AGREEMENT) ORDER, 1987.

The Minister for Health, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 65 of the Dentists Act, 1985 (No. 9 of 1985) and pursuant to an agreement made between the Government and the Government of the United Kingdom hereby orders as follows:—

1. This Order may be cited as the Dentists (Termination of Agreement) Order, 1987.

2. The agreement specified in the First Schedule to the Dentists Act, 1928 (No. 25 of 1928) as to the registration and control of dentists shall cease to have effect as from the 1st day of January, 1988.

3. Notwithstanding the termination of the said agreement a person, other than a national of a Member State of the European Economic Community, who before the date of this Order has commenced a course of training in dentistry in a dental school in the United Kingdom and who before the 1st day of January, 1994 is awarded a dental qualification in the United Kingdom entitling him to registration under section 15 (1) (a) of the United Kingdom Dentists Act, 1984 and which, had the Agreement not been terminated, would have entitled him to have his name entered in the register of dentists maintained under the Dentists Act, 1928 shall, in accordance with the provisions of the Dentists Act, 1985 , be entitled to have his name entered in the register maintained under the Dentists Act, 1985 .

EXPLANATORY NOTE

The effect of this order is to terminate on 1st January, 1988 an agreement made in 1927 between this country and the United Kingdom for the mutual recognition of dental qualifications and for certain ancillary matters. Mutual recognition of dental qualifications is now provided for nationals of Members States under directives adopted by the Council of the European Communities. The existing rights of nationals of countries outside the EEC who have been awarded dental qualifications in the United Kingdom before the termination of the agreement and who apply for registration in this country are preserved under the Dentists Act 1985 and the rights of such nationals who commence dental training in the United Kingdom before the termination of the agreement are preserved under the terms of the Order.
