SOCIAL WELFARE (CONTINENTAL SHELF) REGULATIONS, 1978.

The Minister for Social Welfare, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 10 of the Continental Shelf Act, 1968 (No. 14 of 1968), hereby makes the following Regulations:—

1. These Regulations may be cited as the Social Welfare (Continental Shelf) Regulations, 1978.

2. In these Regulations the expression " designated area " has the meaning assigned to it in section 1 of the Continental Shelf Act, 1968 .

3. Employment in a designated area on or about any drillship, rig, platform or similar installation in the exploration of the seabed or subsoil or in the exploitation of their natural resources which would, if such employment were in the State, be insurable employment or insurable (occupational injuries) employment for the purposes of the Social Welfare Acts, 1952 to 1977, shall, notwithstanding that such employment is not in the State, be treated as insurable employment or insurable (occupational injuries) employment, as the case may be, for those purposes.

4. Section 6 of the Social Welfare (Occupational Injuries) Act, 1966 (No. 16 of 1966) shall not apply as respects an employment to which Article 3 of these Regulations applies.

These Regulations provide that employment in the exploration of the seabed or subsoil or in the exploitation of their natural resources in certain designated areas of the Continental Shelf shall be regarded as insurable employment under the Social Welfare Acts as if such employment was employment within the State.
