EXPLANATORY NOTE

The Social Welfare Act 1973 provides, inter alia, for increases in the maximum rates of old age (contributory), widows' (contributory) and retirement pensions.

These regulations amend the Social Welfare (Old Age (Contributory) Pension) Regulations, 1960, the Social Welfare (Widows' and Orphans' (Contributory) Pensions) Regulations, 1966 and the Social Welfare (Retirement) Pension) Regulations, 1970 to provide for increases in the reduced rates of pensions payable where the contribution conditions are partially satisfied. Provision is made also for the reduction from 24 to 20 of the minimum yearly average of contributions paid or credited each year required to satisfy the contribution condition for old age (contributory) pension.

The improvements take effect from 6th July 1973 in the case of old age (contributory) and widows' (contributory) pensions and from 5th July, 1973 in the case of retirement pension.
