ROAD TRAFFIC (SIGNS) (AMENDMENT) (No. 3) REGULATIONS, 1971.

The Minister for Local Government, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 5 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961 (No. 24 of 1961) and section 95 of the said Act as amended by section 6 of the Road Traffic Act, 1968 (No. 25 of 1968), hereby makes the following Regulations:—

1. (1) These Regulations may be cited as the Road Traffic (Signs) (Amendment) (No. 3) Regulations, 1971.

(2) The Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations, 1962 to 1971 and these Regulations shall be construed together as one.

(3) The citation "The Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations, 1962 to 1971" shall include these Regulations.

2. The First Schedule to the Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations, 1962 ( S.I. No. 171 of 1962 ) is hereby amended by—

(a) the insertion at paragraphs (a) and (b) of Section D of Part III of the words ", or a specified class of traffic," after "traffic",

(b) the addition to Section D of Part III of paragraph (h) and sign 216 as set out in the Schedule to these Regulations,

(c) the addition to Part VI of the following paragraph:—

"10. Signs 207, 208, 209 and 216 may be accompanied by a rectangular plate or a plate of the general shape of sign 1 which shall be placed below the sign and shall furnish in black letters on a white field information in regard to the requirement or prohibition, including the days and hours when the requirement or prohibition applies.", and

(d) the substitution in paragraph 1 of Part VII of "Signs 211, 215 and 216" for "Signs 211 and 215".

SCHEDULE

Paragraph and Sign to be added to Section D of Part III of the First Schedule to the Principal Regulations.

(h) To indicate that traffic, or a specified class of traffic, is prohibited in both directions.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

These Regulations amend the Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations, 1962 to 1971, to provide for the use of a sign (No. 216), to indicate that traffic, or a specified class of traffic, is prohibited in both directions. The Regulations alter the significance to be attached to Signs Nos. 204 to 209 inclusive by enabling a prohibition or requirement to relate to a specified class of traffic. They also permit the use of information plates with Signs Nos. 207, 208, 209 and 216.
