S.I. No. 5 of 1960.


The Taoiseach, in pursuance of the powers conferred by subsection (1) of section 16 of the Statistics Act, 1926 (No. 12 of 1926), and the Statistics Acts, 1926 and 1946 (Transfer of Ministerial Functions) Order, 1949 ( S.I. No. 142 of 1949 ), hereby orders as follows :—

1. Statistics in respect of the year 1959 relating to undertakings carrying on a wholesale or retail distribution of goods or services shall be collected in the year 1960 of the several matters set out in the Schedule hereto.

2. The following are the classes of persons by whom returns are to be made or information is to be given for the purpose of the said statistics, that is to say, every person carrying on a wholesale or retail distribution of goods or services on whom a sufficient requisition under subsection (1) of section 8 of the Statistics Act, 1926 , is made.

3. A copy of the form to be used in the collection of the said statistics, sealed with the Official Seal of the Taoiseach, has been deposited in the Department of the Taoiseach.

4. The Interpretation Act, 1937 (No. 38 of 1937), applies to this Order.

5. This Order may be cited as the Statistics (Census of Distribution) Order, 1960.


The subject matter of this Schedule relates (save where the context otherwise requires) to the year 1959.


I. Particulars of establishment

1. Trading name.

2. Address of establishment.

II. Year of return

The beginning and ending dates of the period covered by the return.

III. Description of business

The usual description of the business.

IV. Persons engaged

Number of persons engaged in the business in the week ended 11th April, 1959, for the following categories :—

(a) Proprietors and unpaid members of proprietor's family working in the business.

(b) Paid employees working in the business, including members of family paid a definite wage or salary.

V. Wages, salaries and commissions paid

(a) Wages and salaries for week ended 11th April, 1959.

(b) Annual wages and salaries.

VI. Total takings

Sales of goods and receipts for services.

VII. Purchases

The amounts spent in the year on goods for re-sale.

VIII. Stocks on hand for sale

The value of goods on hand for sale :—

(a) at the beginning of the year.

(b) at the end of the year.

IX. Expenditure on advertising

The amount spent during the year :—

(a) Paid to advertising agents.

(b) Other expenditure.

The purpose of this instrument is to enable a statutory Sample Census of Distribution to be taken relating to the year 1959, to define its scope and to require that returns be furnished to the Central Statistics Office covering all undertakings in respect of which the prescribed form has been issued.
