THE PUBLIC HEALTH (PRESERVATIVES, ETC., IN FOOD) (AMENDMENT) REGULATIONS, 1943.

The Minister for Local Government and Public Health, in exercise of the powers conferred upon him by the Public Health Acts, 1878 to 1931, the Public Health Act, 1896, the Public Health (Regulations as to Food) Act, 1907, and the Local Government Acts, 1925 to 1941, and of every other power in that behalf enabling him, does hereby make the following Regulations, with the consent of the Revenue Commissioners, so far as they apply to the officers of customs and excise, that is to say :

1. These Regulations may be cited as the Public Health (Preservatives, etc., in Food) (Amendment) Regulations, 1943, and these Regulations and the Public Health (Saorstát Éireann) (Preservatives etc., in Food) Regulations, 1928, shall be construed together and may be cited together as the Public Health (Preservatives, etc. in Food) Regulations, 1928 and 1943.

2. The Public Health (Saorstát Éireann) (Preservatives, etc. in Food) Regulations, 1928, shall be amended as follows, that is to say :—

(1) The following additional proviso shall be inserted at the end of Article 4 (1) and at the end of Article 11 (1) :—

"(iv) The provisions of this Article shall not apply

(a) so as to prohibit the presence in meat of any added sodium or potassium nitrite, or

(b) so as to prohibit the presence in any article of food of sodium or potassium nitrite introduced in the preparation of such article by the use of any meat containing sodium or potassium nitrite."

(2) The following paragraph shall be inserted after Article 4 (3) :—

"(4) No person shall manufacture for sale or sell any cooked meat intended for human consumption other than cured or pickled pork, which contains sodium or potassium nitrite in proportions exceeding two hundred parts per million calculated as sodium nitrite."

(3) The following paragraph shall be inserted after Article 11 (2) :—

"(3) No person shall import any cooked meat intended for sale for human consumption, other than cured or pickled pork, which contains sodium or potassium nitrite inproportions exceeding two hundred parts per million calculated as sodium nitrite."
