EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Instrument and does not purport to be a legal interpretation)

This Order appoints the 1st day of May, 2002 as the date for the coming into operation of the Medical Practitioners (Amendment) Act, 2002 (No. 17 of 2002). The main proposal contained in the Act is to provide that account be taken of professional experience in assessing an application by a temporarily registered Doctor for full registration on the Register of Medical Practitioners.

The amending Bill also makes provision for internship registration and temporary registration to apply in a number of health care settings, and it enables any EU citizen who has obtained their primary degree within the EU to apply for internship registration in this country.
