S.I. No. 283/2001 - European Communities (Units of Measurement) (Amendment) Regulations, 2001


I, Mary Harney, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 3 of the European Communities Act, 1972 (No. 27 of 1972), for the purpose of giving effect to Council Directive 89/617/EEC of 27 November 1989, hereby make the following Regulations:

1.      These Regulations may be cited as the European Communities (Units of Measurement) (Amendment) Regulations, 2001.

2.      In these Regulations-

“Principal Regulations” mean the European Communities (Units of Measurement) Regulations 1992 ( S.I. No. 255 of 1992 );

“Regulations of 1998” mean the European Communities (Units of Measurement) (Amendment) Regulations 1998 ( S.I. No. 510 of 1998 ).

3.      Regulation 4(2) of the Principal Regulations is amended by the substitution for paragraph (e) (inserted by the Regulations of 1998) of the following paragraphs:

“(e)    for the specific field of application set out in Schedule 6 to these Regulations, the units of measurement listed therein may be used until 31 December 2002 and shall not be used thereafter, and

(f)      for the specific field of application set out in Schedule 7 of these Regulations, the units of measurement listed therein may be used until 31 December 2005 and shall not be used thereafter.”.

4.      The Principal Regulations are amended by the substitution for Schedule 6 (inserted by the Regulations of 1998) of the following:

Until the dates referred to in Regulations 4(2)(e) and (f) of these Regulations, the units listed in Schedules 6 and 7 may be combined with each other and with those in Schedule 1 of the Principal Regulations to form compound units.”.
