S.I. No. 167/1999 - European Communities (Amendment) Act, 1998 (Commencement) Regulations, 1999


I, DAVID ANDREWS, Minister for Foreign Affairs, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 3 of the European Communities Act, 1972 (No. 27 of 1972), hereby make the following Regulations:

1. These Regulations may be cited as the European Communities (Amendment) Act, 1998 (Commencement) Regulations, 1999.

2. The European Communities (Amendment) Act, 1998 (No. 25 of 1998), shall be deemed to have been in operation between the 1st day of May, 1999, and the 25th day of May 1999.

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

The Treaty of Amsterdam amending the Treaty on European Union, the Treaties establishing the European Communities and certain related Acts entered into force on 1 May 1999. The purpose of the European Communities (Amendment) Act, 1998 is to make certain amendments to the European Communities Act, 1972 on the entry into force of the Treaty of Amsterdam. The purpose of these Regulations is to deem the European Communities (Amendment) Act, 1998 to have been in operation between 1 May 1999 and 25 May 1999. On 26 May 1999 the European Communities (Amendment) Act, 1998 (Commencement) Order, 1999 was made in order to bring that Act into operation with effect from 26 May 1999.
