S.I. No. 168/1994 - European Communities (Digital European Cordless Telecommunications -Dect) Regulations, 1994.


I, BRIAN COWEN, Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 3 of the European Communities Act, 1972 (No. 27 of 1972), and for the purpose of giving effect to Council Directive No. 91/287/EEC(1) hereby make the following Regulations.

1. These Regulations may be cited as the European Communities (Digital European Cordless Telecommunications—DECT) Regulations, 1994.

2. In these Regulations, except where the context otherwise requires:

"the Directive" means Council Directive No. 91/287/EEC of 3rd June, 1991;

"the Minister" means the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications;

"the digital European cordless telecommunications system" means the technology conforming to the European Telecommunications Standard (ETS) developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) for digital cordless telecommunications, and the telecommunications systems, both public and private, which directly utilise such technology.

3. With effect from 1st July, 1994, the frequency band 1880-1900 MHz is hereby designated exclusively for the digital European cordless telecommunications system and shall enjoy the priority referred to in Article 2 of the Directive.

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

These Regulations are made to give effect to Council Directive No. 91/287/EEC on the frequency band to be designated for the co-ordinated of digital European cordless telecommunications (DECT) into the Community. With effect from 1st July, 1994 the frequency band 1880-1900 MHz is exclusively reserved for DECT. The digital European cordless telecommunications system must conform to the European Telecommunications Standard (ETS) developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), i.e. I.S./ETS 300175-1:1993-I.S./I-ETS 3000176:1993 (inclusive).(2)
