ROAD TRAFFIC (LIGHTING OF VEHICLES) (AMENDMENT) REGULATIONS, 1994.

The Minister for the Environment in exercise of the powers conferred on him by sections 5 and 11 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961 (No. 24 of 1961) hereby makes the following Regulations:—

1. (1) These Regulations may be cited as the Road Traffic (Lighting of Vehicles) (Amendment) Regulations, 1994.

(2) The Road Traffic (Lighting of Vehicles) Regulations, 1963 to 1991 and these Regulations shall be construed as one and may be cited together as the Road Traffic (Lighting of Vehicles) Regulations, 1963 to 1994.

(3) These Regulations shall come into operation on the 1st day of February, 1994.

2. In these Regulations:—

"the Principal Regulations" means the Road Traffic (Lighting of Vehicles) Regulations, 1963 ( S.I. No. 189 of 1963 );

"the Regulations of 1979" means the Road Traffic (Lighting of Vehicles) (Amendment) Regulations, 1979 ( S.I. No. 328 of 1979 );

"the Regulations of 1989" means the Road Traffic (Lighting of Vehicles) (Amendment) Regulations, 1989 ( S.I. No. 267 of 1989 ).

3. Paragraph (a) of sub-article (18) of article 52 of the Principal Regulations as substituted by article 2 of the Regulations of 1979 and as amended by article 2 of the Regulations of 1989 is hereby amended by the insertion after the definition of "breakdown vehicle" of the following definition:—

"'Customs and Excise patrol vehicle' means a mechanically propelled vehicle used by an official of Customs and Excise in the performance of his duties as such official;"

4. Paragraph (b) of sub-article (18) of article 52 of the Principal Regulations as substituted by article 2 of the Regulations of 1979 and as amended by article 3 of the Regulations of 1989 is hereby amended by the insertion of "a Customs and Excise patrol vehicle," before "a fire brigade vehicle".

5. Sub-paragraph (iv) of paragraph (c) of sub-article (18) of article 52 of the Principal Regulations as substituted by article 2 of the Regulations of 1979 is hereby amended by the insertion of "a Customs and Excise patrol vehicle," before "a breakdown vehicle".

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

The purpose of these Regulations is to permit the fitting and use of amber flashing warning lights on Customs and Excise patrol vehicles.
