WEIGHTS AND MEASURES (METRIC EQUIVALENTS) ORDER, 1976.

The Government, in exercise of the powers conferred on them by Section 2 of the Weights and Measures (Metric System) Act, 1897, hereby order as follows :

1. (1) This Order may be cited as the Weights and Measures (Metric Equivalents) Order, 1976.

(2) This Order shall come into operation on the 30th day of April, 1976.

2. The table of metric equivalents in the Schedule to this Order is hereby made in substitution for the table substituted for the table in Part I of the Third Schedule to the Weights and Measures Act, 1878, by the Order in Council made on the 19th day of May, 1898, under Section 2 of the Weights and Measures (Metric System) Act, 1897.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

The Système International d'Unités (SI), the metric system authorised for use in the EEC differs slightly from the metric system used in Ireland. (See Table A). This Order gives effect to SI metric equivalents for the gallon, pound and yard and is necessary to permit the use in legal documents of SI equivalents. The changes will have no practical consequence for Weights and Measures law except in the case of the measurement of extremely large quantities and volumes.
