EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES (MOTOR VEHICLES) REGULATIONS, 1972.

I, PATRICK J. LALOR, Minister for Industry and Commerce, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 3 of the European Communities Act, 1972 (No. 27 of 1972), hereby make the following regulations:

1. These Regulations may be cited as the European Communities (Motor Vehicles) Regulations, 1972.

2. These Regulations shall come into operation on the 1st day of January, 1973.

3. The Motor Vehicles (Registration of Importers) Act, 1968 (No. 15 of 1968), shall be amended—

(a) by the substitution in section 2 (2) of "(2), (3) and (4A) " for "(2) and (3)", and

(b) by the insertion in section 3 after subsection (4) of the following subsection :

"(4A) To enable provisions of Protocol No. 7 to the Act annexed to the Treaty relating to the accession of Ireland to the European Economic Community and to the European Atomic Energy Community, signed at Brussels on the 22nd day of January, 1972, to have full effect, the Minister may, if he so thinks fit, direct the Revenue Commissioners in writing to register in the register, for the importation of motor vehicles originating in the European Economic Community of such make and type as may be specified in the direction, a person who undertakes to comply with such conditions as the Minister may impose at the time of the giving of the direction."

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

The effect of these regulations is to provide arrangements for operating an annual global quota for motor vehicles originating in the Community and not covered by special treatment under the "Scheme" applicable to assembly and import of motor vehicles.
