MAXIMUM PRICES (BREAD) ORDER, 1972.

I, PATRICK J. LALOR, Minister for Industry and Commerce, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by sections 17 and 18 of the Prices Act, 1958 (No. 4 of 1958), section 22A (inserted by the Prices (Amendment) Act, 1965 (No. 23 of 1965)) of that Act, and the Prices Stabilization Order, 1965 ( S.I. No. 208 of 1965 ), as continued in force by the Prices (Amendment) Act, 1972 (No. 20 of 1972), hereby order asfollows :

1. This Order may be cited as the Maximum Prices (Bread) Order, 1972.

2. This Order shall come into operation on the 28th day of September, 1972.

3. In this Order—

" batch bread " means bread which is not baked in containers and is sold or offered for sale in loaves of which the outside is not all crust;

" pan loaves " means loaves of bread baked in containers.

4. The maximum price (including any charge on account of tax) at which batch bread and pan loaves may be sold by retail shall be—

(a) in the case of batch bread and pan loaves which are unsliced—

(i) 7p per lb. when sold in units of 1 lb.,

(ii) 13p per 2 lbs. when sold in units of 2 lbs. or 4 lbs., and

(b) in the case of batch bread and pan loaves which are sliced and wrapped—

(i) 7½p per lb. when sold in units of 1 lb.,

(ii) 13½p per 2 lbs. when sold in units of 2 lbs. or 4 lbs.

5. (1) Batch bread and pan loaves of a type mentioned in paragraph 4 of this Order shall, when sold by retail, be sold only in units of 1 lb., 2 lbs. or 4 lbs.

(2) Subparagraph (1) of this paragraph does not apply in relation to—

(a) any unit of bread weighing 12 ounces or less;

(b) pan loaves of any of the following brands:

(i) Hovis,

(ii) Procea,

(iii) Bermaline,

(iv) Hi-Vi,

(v) Maltana,

(vi) Dr. Vogel's Swiss Health Bread,

(vii) Thoma,

(viii) Abermalt,

(ix) Slimcea.

(3) For the purposes of this Order the weight of a unit of bread shall be—

(a) in the case of bread that leaves the bakery where it is baked on the day on which it is baked, the average of the weights, on leaving the bakery, of 12 units of bread of the same kind baked in that bakery on that day, and

(b) in the case of any other bread, the average of the weights, at the close of baking operations at the bakery where it is baked on the day on which it is baked, of 12 units of bread of the same kind.

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

This Order fixes the maximum prices and the weights at which bread, as defined in the Order, may be sold by retail.
