MERCHANT SHIPPING (LIFE-SAVING APPLIANCES) (AMENDMENT) RULES, 1972.

I, BRIAN LENIHAN, Minister for Transport and Power, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 427 of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1894 (as amended by Section 11 of the Merchant Shipping (Safety Convention) Act, 1952 (No. 29 of 1952), and Section 10 of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1966 (No. 20 of 1966)) and the Transport, Fuel and Power (Transfer of Departmental Administration and Ministerial Functions) Order, 1959 ( S.I. No. 125 of 1959 ) hereby make the following rules.

1. (1) These Rules may be cited as the Merchant Shipping (Life-Saving Appliances) (Amendment) Rules, 1972.

(2) The Merchant Shipping (Life-Saving Appliances) Rules, 1967 ( S.I. No. 100 of 1967 ) and these Rules may be cited together as the Merchant Shipping (Life-Saving Appliances) Rules, 1967 and 1972.

(3) These Rules shall come into operation on the 1st day of November, 1972.

2. The Interpretation Act, 1937 (No. 38 of 1937) applies to these Rules.

3. In the proviso to Rule 10 (4) of the Merchant Shipping (Life-Saving Appliances) Rules, 1967, " at least 70 per cent of " is hereby revoked.

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

The effect of this amendment to the Rules is that ships of Class VI of less than 70 feet in length and plying not more than 3 nautical miles from their starting point in any direction shall carry liferafts, buoyant apparatus or lifebuoys, sufficient for the total number of persons the ship is certified to carry, instead of, as previously, sufficient for only 70 per cent of the total.
