S.I. No. 172 of 1962.

ROAD TRAFFIC (SIGNS) (TEMPORARY AUTHORISATIONS) ORDER, 1962.

The Minister for Local Government in exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 95 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961 , (No. 24 of 1961) hereby orders as follows :—

1. This Order may be cited as the Road Traffic (Signs) (Temporary Authorisations) Order, 1962.

2. Notwithstanding anything contained in the Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations, 1962 ( S.I. No. 171 of 1962 ) the following signs may be used as follows until the Minister for Local Government otherwise determines or until the 31st day of December, 1962, whichever is the earlier :—

(a) informative signs showing in black letters on a yellow or white field—

(i) the direction of and distance to a place, and (where shown) the route letter and number of a road;

(ii) the direction to a place;

(iii) the name of a village or town being entered, or next ahead on a route;

(iv) the name of a county;

(v) that there is a lay-by ahead, and its distance ahead;

(b) an informative sign consisting of a rectangular plate showing in dark letters and markings on a light field or in light coloured letters and markings on a dark field the direction to a car park;

(c) warning signs consisting of—

(i) a rectangular plate (which may be surmounted by a hollow red equilateral triangle) showing in a dark colour on a light field a warning of a hazard to be met;

(ii) a rectangular plate showing in white letters on a red field the words " Road Works Ahead " or other words to indicate that there are road works ahead;

(d) regulatory signs consisting of—

(i) an inverted hollow red equilateral triangle surrounded by a hollow red circle below which is placed a diamond-shaped plate showing in black on a white field a symbol indicating a minor road crossing a major road—to indicate that the road ahead is a major road, the traffic on which has the right of way over traffic approaching from the road on which the sign is provided;

(ii) a sign of the same shape, colour and dimensions as sign 201 in the First Schedule to the Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations, 1962, but without the words shown on that sign—to indicate that the road ahead is a major road, the traffic on which has the right of way over traffic approaching from the road on which the sign is provided;

(iii) a sign of the same shape, colour and design as sign 203 in the First Schedule to the Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations, 1962, but having an overall diameter of eighteen inches and an oblique black bar four inches and a half wide—to indicate the end of a stretch of road to which a special speed limit applies;

(iv) a sign of the same shape, colour and design as sign 211 in the First Schedule to the Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations, 1962, but having an overall diameter of eighteen inches, the figures being only six inches high—to indicate that a special speed limit applies to the road ahead;

(v) a sign to indicate the extent of parking permitted on a public road, consisting of the letter P in white on a rectangular blue field (a small rectangular plate being added below, if necessary, showing in white letters on a blue field information regarding the periods for which parking is permitted) or a similar sign, having the letter P in black on a rectangular white field (with the plate added below, if necessary);

(vi) a sign to indicate that parking is prohibited, consisting of a red circle surrounding a blue, or partly blue and partly yellow field, on which is given in white letters, the advice that parking or waiting is prohibited or the extent of a prohibition as to parking.

3. Notwithstanding anything contained in the Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations, 1962, the following signs may be used as follows until the Minister for Local Government otherwise determines or until the 31st day of December, 1967, whichever is the earlier :—

(a) a temporary informative sign, rectangular in shape, and showing in black letters on a yellow field the direction to a place where an event which will be attended by a large number of persons is to be held;

(b) flashing lights, erected on or before the date of this order under the provisions of Article 16 of the Traffic Signs Regulations, 1956 ( S.I. No. 284 of 1956 ).

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

This Order authorises the continuance in use until the Minister for Local Government otherwise determines or

(a) until 31st December, 1962, in the case of the signs referred to in article 2 of the Order,

(b) until 31st December, 1967, in the case of the signs referred to in article 3,

of certain traffic signs which are not in accordance with the Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations, 1962 ( S.I. No. 171 of 1962 ).
