APPRENTICESHIP COMMITTEE (No. 2) FOR THE FURNITURE TRADE (CONFIRMATION OF RULES) ORDER, 1961.

I, JOHN LYNCH, Minister for Industry and Commerce, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by subsection (1) of Section 9 of the Apprenticeship Act, 1931 , (No. 56 of 1931), hereby order as follows:—

1. This Order may be cited as the Apprenticeship Committee (No. 2) for the Furniture Trade (Confirmation of Rules) Order, 1961.

2. The Interpretation Act, 1937 (No. 38 of 1937), applies to this Order.

3. The Rules set out in the Schedule to this Order are hereby confirmed and shall come into operation on the 13th day of November, 1961.

SCHEDULE

The Rules of the Apprenticeship Committee (No. 2) for the Furniture Trade as set out in Apprenticeship Committee (No. 2) for the Furniture Trade (Confirmation of Rules) (No. 2) Order, 1960 (S.I. No. 3G of 1960) are hereby amended as follows, that is to say, by the deletion of the Rules comprised under the heading " Part III "—-" Rules Regulating Minimum Rates of Wages " and by the substitution therefor of the following:—-

PART III

RULES REGULATING MINIMUM RATES OF WAGES

The Committee specify- hereunder the minimum rates of wages (other than wages for overtime) to he paid to male or female persons employed by way of Apprenticeship in the Trade in the Apprenticeship District.

PROVIDED THAT—

(a) the above rates shall be payable, in the case of apprentices of 18 years of age or over, per week of 45 hours and, in the case of apprentices whose age is less than 18 years, per week of 40 hours;

(b) a male apprentice who has attended an approved course of instruction as defined in the Rules Regulating the Educational Qualifications of Apprentices for a period of two years shall, on being taken into employment in the Trade, be regarded for the purpose of determining the rate of wages payable to him, as being in his second year of apprenticeship;

(c) for the purpose of calculating the minimum rate per hour to which an apprentice is entitled, the minimum rate per week to which the apprentice is entitled under these Rules shall be divided by the maximum number of hours which may be worked in any week by the apprentice; and

(d) the above minimum rates are without prejudice to the payment of higher rates by agreement or otherwise.

The Rules of the Apprenticeship Committee (No. 2) for the Furniture Trade as set out in Apprenticeship Committee (No. 2) for the Furniture Trade (Confirmation of Rules) Order, 1950 ( S.I. No. 219 of 1950 ) are hereby amended as follows, that is to say, by the deletion of the Rules comprised under the heading " Part IV "—-" Rules Regulating the Maximum Hours of Work " and by the substitution therefor of the following:—-

PART IV

RULES REGULATING THE MAXIMUM HOURS OF WORK

The Committee prescribe 45 hours as being the maximum number of hours (exclusive of overtime) which may be worked in any week by apprentices of 18 years of age or over in the Trade and 40 hours as being the maximum number of hours (exclusive of overtime) which may be worked in any week by apprentices whose age is less than 18 years.

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

The purpose of this Order is to confirm new Rules made by the Apprenticeship Committee (No. 2) for the Furniture Trade appointing increased rates of pay and revised hours of work for apprentices employed in the trade outside the Dublin area.
