S.I. No. 38/1960 - Garda Síochána (Appointments) Regulations, 1960.


I, OSCAR TRAYNOR, Minister for Justice, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 14 of the Police Forces Amalgamation Act, 1925 (No. 7 of 1925), and section 1 of the Garda Siochana Act, 1958 (No. 14 of 1958), hereby, with the approval of the Government, make the following regulations :

1.—(1) These Regulations may be cited as the Garda Síochána (Appointments) Regulations, 1960.

(2) The Garda Siochana (Appointments) Regulations, 1945 to 1959, and these Regulations may be cited together as the Garda Siochana (Appointments) Regulations, 1945 to 1960.

2. The Interpretation Act, 1937 (No. 38 of 1937), applies to these Regulations.

3.—(1) Article 4 of the Garda Síochána (Appointments) Regulations, 1945 ( S. R. & O. No. 173 of 1945 ), is hereby amended by the substitution for subparagraph (d) of paragraph (1) of the following subparagraph :

" (d) the Commissioner is satisfied that such person has or will have, on the 1st day of January in the year in which the qualifying educational examination is held, attained the age of 18 years but not attained the age 25 years."

(2) Article 5 of the Garda Siochana (Appointments) Regulations, 1945 (Amendment) Regulations, 1954 ( S.I. No. 28 of 1954 ), is hereby revoked.

4.—(1) Article 4 of the Garda Síochána (Appointments) Regulations, 1958 ( S.I. No. 176 of 1958 ), is hereby amended—

(i) by the substitution in paragraph (b) for " five feet six inches of " five feet five inches ", and

(ii) by the substitution for paragraph (c) of the following paragraph :

" (c) she is certified by the Civil Service Commissioners to have passed a qualifying educational examination in such subjects and of such standard as the Civil Service Commissioners, after consultation with the Commissioner, shall determine, and "

(2) Paragraph (1) of this Article shall not have effect in relation to a woman selected by the Civil Service Commissioners on the results of a competition which commenced in the month of January, 1960.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

This Order provides for the reduction from 19 years to 18 years in the minimum age for male recruits, for the reduction from 5' 6" to 5' 5" in the minimum height for female recruits and for bringing the examination procedure for female candidates into line with that which applies to male candidates.
