LARGE PUBLIC SERVICE VEHICLES (AMENDMENT) REGULATIONS, 1957.

The Minister for Local Government in exercise of the powers conferred on him by sub-section (2) of section 121 of the Road Traffic Act, 1933 , hereby makes the following regulations :—

1. These regulations may be cited as the Large Public Service Vehicles (Amendment) Regulations, 1957.

2. In these regulations the expression "the principal regulations" means the Large Public Service Vehicles Regulations, 1935.

3. These regulations and the principal regulations shall be construed as one and may be collectively cited as the Large Public Service Vehicles Regulations, 1935 and 1957.

4. These regulations shall continue in force until the Hydrocarbon Oils Rationing Order, 1956 ( S.I. No. 330 of 1956 ) and the Petrol Rationing Order, 1956 ( S.I. No. 331 of 1956 ) shall cease to be in force or until the 31st day of March, 1957, whichever is the earlier, and shall then expire.

5. During the continuance of these regulations, in the special circumstances existing due to the provisions of the Hydrocarbon Oils Rationing Order, 1956, and the Petrol Rationing Order, 1956, the following article shall be substituted for article 48 of the principal regulations :—

" Additional Passengers

48. (1) Subject to the provisions of this article a greater number of passengers may be carried in an omnibus than would otherwise be lawful under section 121 of the Act.

(2) No additional passengers may be carried in the upper deck of a double-deck omnibus by virtue of this article.

(3) No additional passengers may be carried by virtue of this article in the lower deck of a double-deck omnibus when seats are unoccupied in the upper deck of such omnibus.

(4) The additional passengers carried in a single-deck omnibus by virtue of this article shall not exceed in number eight or one-third of the sitting accommodation of the omnibus, whichever is the less.

(5) The additional passengers carried in the lower deck of a double-deck omnibus by virtue of this article shall not exceed in number eight or one-third of the sitting accommodation of such lower deck, whichever is the less."

Explanatory Note.

The effect of these regulations is to permit the carrying of eight standing passengers in single-deck omnibuses or in the lower deck of double-deck omnibuses during the period of petrol rationing or up to the 31st day of March, 1957, whichever is the earlier.
