CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT (LINEN AND COTTON TEXTILE INDUSTRY) (EXCLUSION AND YOUNG PERSONS DEEMED TO BE ADULT WORKERS) REGULATIONS, 1954.

I, WILLIAM NORTON, Minister for Industry and Commerce, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by sections 29 , 40 and 52 of the Conditions of Employment Act, 1936 (No. 2 of 1936), and of every and any other power me in this behalf enabling, and being satisfied that young persons employed to do the form of industrial work specified in Parts II and III of the Schedule to these regulations are so employed as assistants to adult workers and that the work of such adult workers could not proceed in a satisfactory manner if such young persons did not work for the same hours as such adult workers, and after consultation with representatives of employers interested in such form of industrial work and with representatives of workers so interested, hereby make the following regulations :—

1. These regulations may be cited as the Conditions of Employment (Linen and Cotton Textile Industry) (Exclusion and Young Persons deemed to be Adult Workers) Regulations, 1954.

2. The Interpretation Act, 1937 (No. 38 of 1937), applies to these regulations.

3. The form of industrial work specified in Part I of the Schedule to these regulations is hereby declared to be excluded industrial work for the purpose of section 46 of the Conditions of Employment Act, 1936 (No. 2 of 1936).

4. The following provisions shall have effect in respect of the form of industrial work specified in Part I of the Schedule to these regulations :

(a) no woman shall be employed to do any such work between the hour of 11 p.m. on any day and the hour of 7 a.m. on the following day ;

(b) no woman shall be so employed on any day until after the expiration of eleven hours from the time at which she ceased to do industrial work on the previous day.

5. The following young persons over the age of sixteen years, namely—

(a) male young persons engaged in the form of industrial work specified in Part II of the Schedule to these regulations, and

(b) female young persons engaged in the form of industrial work specified in Part III of that Schedule

shall, while so engaged, be deemed to be adult workers for the purposes of the Conditions of Employment Act, 1936 .

SCHEDULE.

PART I.

The minding of looms, watching for and repairing breakages of yarn, changing shuttles yarn winding.

PART II.

The work of bobbin-boys, weft carriers and reachers-in.

PART III.

Assisting women workers in yarn winding and loom minding.
