S.I. No. 325/1951 - Gárda Síochána (Promotion) Regulations, 1951.


The Minister for Justice, with the approval of the Government, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 14 of the Police Forces Amalgamation Act, 1925 (No. 7 of 1925), and of every and any other power him in this behalf enabling, hereby makes the following regulations :

1.—(1) These Regulations may be cited as the Gárda Síochána (Promotion) Regulations, 1951.

(2) The Gárda Síochána (Promotion) Regulations, 1925 to 1947, and these Regulations may be cited together as the Gárda Síochána (Promotion) Regulations, 1925 to 1951.

2. In these Regulations, the expression " the Principal Regulations " means the Gárda Síochána (Promotion) Regulations, 1925, as amended

by subsequent regulations.

3. The Interpretation Act, 1937 (No. 38 of 1937), applies to these regulatious.

4. The Regulations mentioned in the Schedule to these Regulations are hereby revoked to the extent specified in the second column of the said Schedule.

5. The Principal Regulations are hereby amended in the following respects:—

(i) by the substitution for paragraph (a) of Regulation 2 of the following :

Irish.

" (a) Examination in Educational subjects.

English Composition (including the summarising of a passage in English.)

Arithmetic.

Geography." ;

(ii) by the substitution for Regulation 5 of the following :

" 5. A sergeant shall not be eligible for promotion to the rank of Station Sergeant unless he has passed the Class I examination in educational subjects and the Class II examination in police duties but a Sergeant who, before the 1st day of January, 1952, passed the former Class II examination in educational subjects shall, for the purposes of this Regulation, be exempt from passing the said Class I examination and aSergeant who has passed the Class II literary examination for promotion in the former Dublin Metropolitan Police shall, for the purposes of this Regulation, be exempt—

(a) from passing the said Class I examination, and

(b) from passing Criminal Law and Procedure in the Class II Promotion examination in Police Duties under these Regulations." ;

(iii) by the substitution for Regulation 6 of the following :

" 6. The Class II Promotion examination shall be conducted by means of written papers or oral examinations or written papers and oral examinations upon the following subjects :—

Criminal Law and Procedure.

Examination in Police Duties.

Police and Detective Duties.

Drill." ;

(iv) by the substitution for paragraph (a) of Regulation 10 of the following—

Irish.

" (a) Examination in Educational subjects.

English Composition (including the summarising of a passage in English.)

Arithmetic.

Geography."
